Officials of Embraer have lifted a veil of secrecy of the most confidential program of the Legacy 650 company at the NBAA exhibition, less than in a month after two pilot airplanes have risen in air. Embraer Legacy 650 worth 29,5 million dollars represents conservative, without extra commercial risk development of Legacy 600 worth 27 million dollars with the increased range and an opportunity to carry out transatlantic flights. Flying range of 7200 km with four passengers will also allow the airplane to fly from London to England to London in Ontario (Canada), from Dubai to Dublin, from Basel to Boston and from Los Angeles to Lima in the cruiser mode of the maximum range. This circumstance allows to carry the airplane to a class of range Bombardier Challenger 605, however the Brazilian airplane has salon considerably of bigger volume with three passenger areas.

It is remarkable that Embraer Legacy 650 is also the heavy airplane. It will be capable to transport the 14th pass. and the steward on distance of 6500 km and to land with a fuel reserve according to requirements of NBAA IFR. In the future pilots will see that Embraer and Honeywell have provided very demanded updating of avionics for Embraer Legacy 650. The new Honeywell Primus Elite package which is also installed on Legacy 600 includes flat multipurpose indicators, the combined vertical navigation with multiple points of a route, a possibility of use of perspective system of air navigation of FANS 1/A, and also GPS receivers with system of the panoramic review, course landing approach with vertical targeting (LPV) and system of the navigation instructions RNP 0.3. Primus Elite also has a paperless flight map, however the Embraer company has decided to keep autonomous double electronic systems of onboard documentation CMC for support of its software for the purpose of planning of flight of OPERA and Easy Dispatch.

Small improvements have been made also in salon. The system of entertainments during flight of Airshow 4000 of production Rockwell Collins will become the standard onboard the new airplane. The car will have more silent distribution of an air flow and more low levels of a sound in all three passenger areas of salon. As the standard equipment at the new airplane the possibility of high-speed broadband connection of Inmarsat SwiftBroadband providing IP-telephony, the protected functionality of VPN and Internet access with moderate speed is provided. The front onboard kitchen 2,4 m long will provide more effective use of space. In the rear of salon there is a toilet with external service which adjoins a luggage compartment.

Two options of an internal design on the 13th pass will be offered. and two options on the 14th pass. with different combinations of four-seater sections of club chairs, sofas, conference groups and low horizontal cabinets. In all configurations of salon the level of the central pass for the purpose of increase in space over the head is lowered. The Embraer company has own joiner’s workshop in Gavian-Peyshota, and final assembly is made at plant at headquarters in San José – dos-Kampusch.

STRUCTURE AND DISTINCTIONS OF SYSTEMS

Embraer Legacy 650 like Legacy 600 uses as a basis EMB 135BJ glider — strengthened to sustain higher weight of the airplane. Stronger wing of EMB 145XR, the regional airplane almost with the same weight parameters, as well as Embraer Legacy 650, “is replaced” to the strengthened fuselage. The airplane will receive new, stronger windshields of Herculite II of production PPG Aerospace which will replace former polycarbonate windows of a cabin of pilots. Increase in the maximum take-off weight by 1783 kg, to 24300 kg, and maximum thrust for 10% leads to increase in required length of the runway in standard conditions on 39 m.

Embraer Legacy 650 will have the maximum landing weight, as at 145XR — 20000 kg. It will allow the airplane to take aboard 978 kg more fuel in comparison with Legacy 600 and, therefore, to increase flying range without refueling by 740 km.

The new airplane will benefit from the program of development Embraer under the name “Landing and Take-off in Mountain Airfields” (HALTO — High Altitude Landing and Takeoff). Optional certification of HALTO will provide access to the airports located at the height up to 4200 m including the airports La Paz (Bolivia; height is 4058 m), Dzhuliaka (Peru; 3826 m) and Lidvill (Colombia; 3028 m).

The fuel system with a capacity of 9400 kg is the only system of a glider which has undergone serious changes. The new model will keep the main tanks of Legacy 600 in wings with a capacity of 5135 kg, a front podfyuzelyazhny tank with a capacity of 1785 kg and flexible tanks in a tailpiece of a fuselage with a capacity of 1320 kg.

Additional fuel is stored in tanks with a capacity of 334 kg in the tsentroplena and a new podfyuzelyazhny tank with a capacity of 824 kg behind a wing. The auxiliary front podfyuzelyazhny tank has no significant effect on centering characteristics as it is located close to a wing rear edge.

In addition to changes in a fuel system and a podfyuzelyazhny fairing of a fuel tank operators will notice few differences between two airplanes. For example, the electrical system remains without changes and consists of the 400-ampere engine-driven generators, dual nickel-cadmium accumulators and the 400-ampere generator of a starter of the auxiliary power unit. The left and right hydraulic systems have one pump with the drive from the engine and one pump with the electric drive for actuating of ailerons and a yaw rudder, the chassis, spoilers, remote control of turn of a windscreen pillar of the chassis, remote control of a wheel brake, mechanisms of a thrust reverse and system of closing of the main entrance door. The air which is selected from the ninth and fourteenth compressor stages of the engine is used for heating and conditioning of salon by means of two installations with an air cycle, systems of pressurization with differential pressure of 0,6 atm and ice protection for both wings and a front edge of tail plumage. The selected air of the auxiliary power unit or land air can be also used for heating and conditioning.

KEEPING LINES OF THE DESIGN OF LEGACY

Embraer positions EMB 135BJ as the best airplane in the market of business aircraft from the point of view of comfort for passengers and a practicality. Legacy 650 keeps all best qualities of model 600. While lateral section of salon 183 cm high and 210 cm wide is the smallest in a class of big salons, the total length of salon almost same, as well as at Challenger 850 or Global Express XRS. Thanks to it there is a lot of place for three passenger areas that is desirable for transocean flights as to six people can sleep lying on couples of chairs located against each other or on full-size sofas.

The total amount of a cabin makes 46,7 m3, taking the second place only after two models of the Bombardier airplanes: Gulfstream 550 and 650. Of course, derivatives of such airliners as Embraer Lineage 1000, Boeing Business Jet and Airbus Corporate Jet, possess big salons, but Legacy 650 have an essential price advantage in comparison with these cars.

Embraer works on implementation of broadband connection of salon not so aggressively as some other aircraft manufacturers. Inmarsat SwiftBroadband providing the transfer speed of these 432 kb / with — the only offered system, and the satellite telephone Iridium system provides a voice communication. The vice-president of Embraer Executive Jets Mauricio Almeida has declared that the company considers also other broadband systems, such as Aircell 3G of surface-to-air and satellite system in the Ku-range which speed is five times more than SwiftBroadband speed, but their development is at earlier stages.

As well as at Legacy 600, at Legacy 650 the volume of internal baggage compartment makes 6,8 m3 that is the largest volume for all airplanes of this class. Optional folding regiments improve efficiency of use of space. The front compartment contains 585 kg of baggage, and the salon can contain 1,3 m3 of hand luggage. Thus, the team and each of 14 passengers have opportunities for placement of 0,475 m3 of hand luggage and 34 kg of baggage. The price, characteristics and comfort of salon were always key Embraer offers. Embraer Legacy 650 will continue this strategy. As well as in case of Legacy 600, its price for millions of dollars is lower, than the cost of the competing models with the salon consisting of three zones. Now Embraer Legacy 650 offers transocean flying range. If on success of Embraer with Legacy 600 to try to predict potential reception of Embraer Legacy 650 by the market, then this airplane, perhaps, will take away considerable part of sales of airplanes of business aircraft with big salon from the leading producers of similar cars.

The Embraer Legacy 650 is an upgraded version of the 600, with an increased maximum flight range of 7,223km if carrying four passengers, or 7,112 km if carrying eight passengers, amounting to an extra 926 km of range in comparison to its predecessor. This extra range is enabled by additional fuel tanks located to the rear of the baggage hold in the tail, and also in front of the wing.

The addition of winglets, and an overall design focus on drag reduction is also behind this increased performance. The Embraer Legacy 650 makes use of a pair of Rolls Royce AE 3007A2 engines, enabling a maximum flight ceiling of 41,000 feet, or 37,000 feet when configured for airline use. The Embraer Legacy 650 can accommodate up to 16 passengers in its standard configuration that is typically divided into three separate areas.
