Small six-seater business Jet Eclipse 500 (EA-500) is development of the experimental Williams V-Jet II designed and constructed in 1997 by the Scaled Composites company by request of the Williams International company for tests of new TRDD FJX-2. The plane with the new engine executed the first flight in 1997 at an air show of association of experimental aircraft in Oshkosh. The plane with a side panel of the return sweep and V-shaped plumage was completely made of composites. The new aircraft attracted so great interest that in 1998 for implementation of the perspective program the Eclipse Aviation company was formed.

As a result the fuselage was redesigned, it became all-metal; the direct side panel and T-shaped tail plumage were established. In process of production of the fuselage introduced the latest technologies, as much as possible having automated it. Eclipse 500 was developed under two Williams International EJ-22 engines (a production version of TRDD FJ22/FJX-2), but its flight data (the first flight – on August 26, 2002) in such look were unsatisfactory that led to installation aboard the plane of two PW610F engines. The pilot model with Pratt & Whitney engines executed the first flight on December 31, 2004.

The certificate of type aboard the plane of Eclipse 500 is received on July 27, 2006, soon after certification of the PW610F engine. The Eclipse Aerospace company inheriting business of bankrupt Eclipse Aviation develops courageous plans for operational development and improvement of the plane. As a result “an adult copy” Eclipse 500 will be able to transport three passengers on distance of 1125 nautical miles (2083 km) and to gain height directly to FL410 echelon. Now the Federal aviation administration of the USA (FAA) limited to the directive AD 2011-06-06 the maximum flight altitude to 30 thousand feet because of soot congestion cases in combustion chambers of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW610F engines. It in turn leads up to 925 miles (1488 km) to restriction of range.

On the plane is available: five chairs and internal luggage compartment of 0,45 m3. Is absent: toilet. The additional chair will add 14 kg to the weight of the empty plane. The maximum take-off weight makes 2719 kg; it concerns all planes with serial numbers from 0039 and above as on them the complex of the completions considerably improving LTH is carried already out. As for earlier issued aircrafts, their upgrade according to the service bulletin SB 500-99-001 though is possible, but is unfairly expensive.

The majority of planes with serial numbers from 104 and are equipped with an onboard complex of the second generation Avio NG, with advanced system of display of flight information (EFIS) and the improved radio equipment above, but without zone navigation (RNAV). Some of them are equipped also additionally with the Garmin GPS400W receivers providing navigation accuracy within 5 miles (BRNAV).

Approximately from the midpoint of this year Eclipse Aerospace intends to establish the Avio IFMS complex which will be compared by opportunities to the best samples of avionics of the similar class Garmin G1000 or Rockwell CollinsPro Line 21. The complex instead of two GPS400W receivers includes the full-fledged integrated control systems of flight (FMS).

As for an upgrade according to the service bulletin SB 500-99-004, it includes also the completions allowing to carry out flight in the conditions of frosting. The majority of the Eclipse planes without such completions is on sale at the price from 900 thousand to 1,2 million dollars. The program of an individual upgrade (Avio IFMS plus the deicing system) can cost 750 thousand dollars. Standard sets also exist, but also they aren’t cheap at all. So the new plane for 2,15 million dollars, with factory finishing and completions, looks more attractively, thus that the factory guarantee is applied to it.

It is very simple to fly on Eclipse 500. Dumping speed (with the maximum landing weight of 2540 kg) makes 73 knots. However steering of ailerons demands great efforts, considering that the side control knob doesn’t give big freedom of the movement (in comparison with a steering wheel). Servocompensators would be very opportunely.

It is categorically important to watch speed, especially on landing as the plane has no intertseptor and brakes aren’t equipped with antiyuzovy system. If over a strip butt at you the minimum rated speed on a glide path (Vref), clean ORES to small gas and reduce speed to landing before a contact. On condition of a dry strip and the maximum landing weight length of a run will make 850 m. Add couple of knots over Vref, and you will need more strip, than for Boeing. Original radial tires of Michelin wear out quickly, for only 100 landings. More antiwear diagonal Goodyear tires will live three times longer.

Still there is not resolved number of problems with TOIR. The producer works versions of decisions. Pratt & Whitney Canada promises to present a new spherical tube of a combustion chamber in the II quarter 2011 that will allow to restore cruiser flight altitude to 41 thousand feet.

According to the president of Eclipse Aerospace Mason Holland, it can occur within the next one or two years. The price of new planes will fluctuate ranging from 2,5 to 3,0 million dollars that will affect also the price of the planes which were in operation.

So, at such number of completions whether it is worth investing money in Eclipse? The conservative buyer, most likely, will prefer to wait half a year-year. However, by then all most attractive offers will disperse.
