Dassault Falcon 7X – jet three-engine business jets. It is made since 2005 by the French company Dassault Aviation.

History of Falcon 7X.

At the beginning of the 21st century the Dassault company made the decision to create the new plane on Falcon 900 replacement which is made since 1984. The prototype made the first flight in May, 2005 and same year was presented to public at an air show to Le Bourget. Falcon 7X — a leader of a model range of the Dassault Aviation company, the business jets representing new generation. Its advantage — a combination of range and speed to unprecedented profitability.

In April, 2007 the new plane received certificates of type from the European EASA and the American FAA and the same year the first Falcon 7X was transferred to the customer.

Falcon 7X design.

Falcon 7X the first plane developed and constructed by Dassault within the concept of production Product Lifecycle Management when all liner is designed in the virtual environment. The company used the special software for development of virtual model of the plane, its design, construction, assembly, testing and maintenance.

Fundamental difference from other business jets is the high-speed wing for 30% surpassing analogs in efficiency. The area of a wing is increased by 40% in comparison with the Falcon 900 planes. Vertical stabilizer stronger and 20% more by the size, than at Falcon 900EX. The plane is equipped with three Pratt & Whitney Canada PW307A engines. These engines guarantee reliability and the minimum operational expenses. Their resource makes 7 200 hours of a raid – it is about 14 years of operation.

Also Falcon 7X became the first business jets equipped with a complex of electro remote control (except for the corporate Airbus ACJ plane, created on the basis of the commercial A318 liner)

According to the company, an opportunity in advance to count all possible disagreements which could be shown by production of the plane allowed to collect the first board 7X within seven months that almost twice quicker, than could be required at traditional approach to production of the first sample of the new car.

Operation of Dassault Falcon 7X.

The model became the champion in the market of heavy business jets: at the time of the beginning of deliveries in 2005 Dassault already had about 200 orders for this plane. General information on Dassault Falcon 7X.

The prototype of Dassault Falcon 7x made the first flight in May, 2005 and same year was presented to public at an air show to Le Bourget.

Design of Dassault Falcon 7X.

Falcon 7X is the first plane which is completely developed in the virtual environment. Dassault used
the software for management of life cycle of a product from Dassault Systemes for development of the plane from the point of view of designing, development, assembly, system integration, tests and maintenance.

Production Dassault Falcon 7X.

The list of suppliers of components of the plane includes: EADS CASA (horizontal stabilizers), Latecoere (a tail part of the fuselage), Socata (fairing), Sonaca (slats) and Stork-Fokker (the operating surfaces of a back part of a wing). Aircelle and Aermacchi are responsible for delivery of gondolas of engines and devices of a reverse of draft. Saint Gobain Sully delivers a cabin glazing.

All production objects of Dassault are involved in production of the plane. The top and lower panels of a wing are manufactured on Dassault in Seclin, a forward part of the fuselage – in Argenteuil, assembly of the fuselage happens in Biarritz. The wing is going to Martignas near Bordeaux. Final assembly is made on Dassault Bordeaux Merignac.

Crew cabin.

Use of Dassault/Honeywell EASy technology allows to reduce load of pilots, allowing them to concentrate on flight performance. The cabin of crew of Falcon 7X EASy is based on a complex of avionics Honeywell Primus Epic II.

Information is displayed on four flat LCD displays of high resolution with an active matrix (AMLCD) the sizes of 13 × 10 inches, and also on a windshield.

The complex of avionics includes a double failure-safe automatic control system of flight, the double inertial navigation system, double sensors of air data, double 24-channel GPS system, the weather Primus 880 radar with detection of turbulence, EGPWS, the radio altimeter and the integrated digital system of a radio communication.

As an option the 7-channel satellite communication system (SATCOM) MCS-7000 is available. The system is equipped with the EMS Technologies AMT-50 antenna with high coefficient of strengthening.

Passenger salon Dassault Falcon 7X.

Width of salon, 2.64 m – same as at Falcon 900EX, however it is much longer – 11.91 m.

The design of salon is focused on comfort of passengers counting upon 13-hour non-stop flight.

Dassault Falcon 7X engines

Three Pratt & Whitney Canada PW307A engines develop draft 28.47kN (6402 lb) that allows that allows to operate the plane in uloviya of high temperatures and the mountain area. In the world of business aircraft obtaining the certificate like the next plane is not extraordinary news. It is quite difficult to surprise with it someone. And nevertheless still speak about Falcon 7X certification and write as about a landmark event. Reasons of such unknown resonance three: first, the plane was certified by at the same time American Federal aviation administration (FAA) and the European agency on safety of flights (EASA), and for the business equipment this event unprecedented. On the scale of the world aviation industry it is the second case after the epoch-making A380 program of the European aircraft manufacturing giant Airbus. Collaboration of experts of two organizations demanded a lot of coordination and productive efforts on both sides of Atlantic. Especially as (and it secondly) for the first time certified documentation was provided not on papers, and in the form of three-dimensional computer drawings and electronic base of design and production data.
And at last, it is really “revolutionary” plane to some extent changing our ideas of business jets. When heads of Dassault made the decision on creation of the plane with the increased range which could compete with Gulfstream G550 and Bombardier Global Express XRS, they had two ways: it is simple “to stretch” 900X, having corrected as far as possible its characteristics, or to start development with a clean slate. Heads of the French firm chose the second, and this decision, certainly, was repaid.
Having applied the technologies fulfilled on the Mirage and Rafale fighters (military equipment — one of the Dassault group main activities), the producer presented to the world the first business jets with an electroremote control system. The principle of action of this system briefly can be stated so. The pilot of the regular plane constantly solves a problem: in what situation there have to be operating aerodynamic surfaces that the plane flew definitely? On the plane with an electroremote control system of these calculations the special computer is engaged, and the pilot by means of governing bodies only sets a task for it.
Besides, FLY-BY-WIRE allowed designers of Dassault to reach the new level of a ratio of stability and controllability, and also to improve economic characteristics. Stability of the plane with a usual control system is provided with tail plumage: Kiel and stabilizer. Commercial planes to meet the requirements to stability set in aviation rules, have to have the stabilizing planes of the big size, and it leads to bigger fuel consumption and reduction of flying range. On fighters with FLY-BY-WIRE the principle of dynamically unstable plane which has rather small sizes of the stabilizing planes was for the first time realized, and stability is reached thanks to permanent job of managing directors of surfaces who are run by the computer with the corresponding sensors and constantly compensate plane deviations from the set direction. Gradually FLY-BY-WIRE began to be established also on planes of civil aviation.
Application of FLY-BY-WIRE allowed Dassault, without endowing stability, to considerably improve aerodynamics 7X — in particular, to establish a new wing with increased by a corner of sweep and lengthening. Characteristics of a wing became the major factor which provided 7X flying range in 11000 km. And the maximum speed of a dive shown in flight tests corresponds to number of the Move 0,93 (for more details see ATO #74, page 74). Thus, FLY-BY-WIRE puts Falcon 7X on generation ahead of competitors, automatically guaranteeing it about ten records.
But advanced technologies are inherent not only designs of a new child of Dassault, they are put also in a technique of its design and the organization of mass production. 7X — the first-ever plane (the second — Boeing 787) at which design the complex of information solutions of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management, product lifecycle management) was used. Its application allowed to reduce time of production of the first planes twice in comparison with the previous Falcon models (to record seven months) due to refusal of construction of the engineering model, a prototype and pre-series samples. Rub from four planes participating in tests are already sold to customers. Now PLM is applied in mass production of the plane, servicing, development of individual projects of interior design etc.
The power plant corresponds to the level of design of the plane in general: according to the statement of representatives of Pratt&Whitney, the PW307A engine developed especially for 7X on the basis of PW300 series engines — the leader in the class by fuel efficiency, and noise level and issues is significantly lower than the norms established to ICAO. Three engines on 2,9 t of thrust everyone provide cumulative draft of 8,7 t that gives to the car good installed power per employee.
The first three cars are already parked to customers, more than 60 planes are at various stages of readiness. Until the end of the year operators will be given 10-15 cars, and in 2008 — 36. In Russia 7X will begin to fly since 2008. According to the regional director of Dassault Aviation in Russia Andrey Lebedinsky, number of the Russian customers of new Falcon now more than ten. Visitors and participants of the business program of the Moscow aerospace salon (MAKS-2007) will be able to see the plane this year.
According to statements of the management of Dassault, the producer counts on 40% of the market of long-haul planes of a business class, planning to sell not less than 400-500 Falcon 7X; at the same time the investments into the program which made 700 million dollars presumably will pay off after sale of 300 cars.

Demand and plans of the Dassault Falcon 7X expansion.

There was Falcon 7X in time, than ensured fantastic demand. Its commissioning coincided with unprecedented rise in the market of business aircraft. If in crisis 2003 of Dassault it was succeeded to sell no more than 40 planes, and in 2005 — is ten more, then sales of 2006 made record number in 158 cars.
Falcon 7X worth 45 million dollars not only was the most popular product of Dassault, but also set up a record among planes of business aircraft by the number of the orders collected until certification. For today the stock of orders makes about 170 cars for owners and operators of 33 countries that provides four years of production. The next slot on acquisition 7X was removed for 2012. At the same time deliveries of other models did not stop at all: deliveries of Falcon 2000 are painted to the middle of 2010, and Falcon 900 — until the end of 2009. Such success put top management of the company before a dilemma. To provide early terms of deliveries, it is necessary to expand production. But the cyclic nature of business assumes inevitable recession of demand, and then excessive capacities will become for the company financial freight, and from valuable and the employees it is necessary to get rid.
Usually urgent orders are carried out at the expense of reserves of the secondary market. But now demand for second-hand models of the Falcon family such is that buyers are ready to offer to 50 million dollars for the five-year car, i.e. is more than catalog price of the new plane.
Having analysed a situation, the management of Dassault made the decision on expansion of the assembly line in Bordeaux (France), and also the center of finishing to Little Rock (piece Arkansas, the USA). According to John Rozanvallon, the president of Falcon Jet, the Dassault subsidiary specializing in civil programs, structural changes of the market inspire optimism concerning stability of business. First, geographically the market became more uniform. Growth of sales in the USA more and more moderate; for the first time the volume of orders from other regions in 2006 exceeded 60%, and this tendency will remain in the next years. But the most active growth is shown by Western Europe, and also Eastern Europe and Russia, the Middle East and Latin America. This year the plane is for the first time delivered to China. Secondly, the clients changed. If earlier only the companies from the list of 500 largest American corporations (according to the Fortune magazine), then in the last two-three years about a half of clients — individuals and the companies of the second echelon could afford the equipment of such level. These factors have to smooth fluctuations of the market and reduce risk for long-term investments into production.

Production and finishing of Dassault Falcon 7X.

As a result of reorganization of productions and expansion of capacities within one and a half years rates of production have to reach total level of 120 planes of all Falcon models in a year (at the moment 75). The line of final assembly is calculated on simultaneous assembly of 15-16 planes now. However by the end of this year is planned to stop release of the Falcon 50 model that will allow to increase production of new models: 7X, 2000DX/EX and 900 DX/EX.
Expansion will concern also the centers of finishing — the enterprises which are engaged in painting of the plane and finishing of salons according to individual wishes of customers. The area of production premises of the center of finishing to Little Rock will increase by 9300 sq.m, and staff on the 200th persons. More works on finishing of salons will be performed also on the basis of Jet Aviation in Basel where planes of the European customers receive interiors. Since 2009 20 new planes will annually leave a hangar in Basel. Dassault is the only producer of business jets having own center of finishing. Therefore all process from the green plane (thanks to anticorrosive processing the plane leaves from the assembly line of really characteristic green color, and so far it will not get own painting and an interior, it is called green) to finished product takes no more than four months. At other producers on it not less than half a year leaves.
All these measures are also designed to prepare the place for the new Dassault project which will replace Falcon 50. The program which received the name SMS, so far at a feasibility study stage, however representatives of the company recognize that there are no internal obstacles for start of the project.

Management of life cycle of Dassault Falcon 7X.

Extensive development of production is a traditional way which Dassault though does not shun, but also is not limited, introducing a radical way of increase in production efficiency — methodology of product lifecycle management (PLM). By PLM it is integrated with the computer-aided engineering system CATIA V5. This program complex is created by Dassault Systemes subsidiary together with IBM for design of the plane, and also planning and implementation of production in the virtual environment. To three-dimensional models and the uniform electronic database all partners and suppliers of the program whom more than twenty in Europe, the USA and Canada have access. Integration of two systems allows to connect design, production and business processes throughout all life cycle of a product. It not only brings interaction between all divisions of the company (from designers to support service of customers) to the new level of efficiency, but also allows to simplify modification of the project radically. Shortchanging and comprehensive assessment of modifications happen instantly, at the same time mistakes are excluded. Also — in real time, in the presence of the customer and taking into account his inquiries — the individual design of salon is formed. Besides these indisputable advantages application of PLM allowed to optimize servicing process as already at a design stage by means of three-dimensional modeling of actions of technicians availability of the VS key components was counted.
PLM breaks production into the standardized blocks, so-called virtual modules. Only process of registration of an interior of salon assumes 15 thousand such modules. Full development of PLM technology (that will occur by 2008) will allow to reduce time of finishing of salon to three months. PLM will also allow to give a part of works on outsourcing, keeping at the same time complete control of quality of a product. However, in a pursuit of time the producer does not forget about an exclusivity of each car. The interior details developed by individual inquiries of the customer will still gather and be established manually.

Support of customers of Dassault Falcon 7X.

Organized system of support of customers — an indispensable condition for a successful conclusion to the market of the VS new type. It especially essentially when it is about an innovative product, such as Falcon 7X. The Dassault company took care of that all questions and difficulties of operators 7X were solved quickly and without serious consequences.
The round-the-clock centers of support of customers already function in Le Bourget (France) and Teterboro (New Jersey, the USA). The Russian operators 7X should be ready to the fact that all documentation will be provided exclusively in electronic form. Several innovations are designed to facilitate life to operators. First, it is the expanded conditions of a guarantee assuming the increased term and the expanded list of the units served on a guarantee. Secondly, the program of servicing and repair is optimized, interprocedural intervals are increased by 50% in comparison with the previous Falcon models. So, the C-check form it is necessary to spend only each 8 years (or through 4 thousand take-offs / landings). A between-repairs resource of the PW307A engine — 7200 h. In the service centers spare parts for urgent repair are already delivered to the sum nearly 100 million dollars worldwide. The company sets the purpose to provide to operators instant availability of 98% of spare parts.
Retraining of aircrew on the Falcon 7X type is already carried out on full-flight exercise machines (level D) in two aviation training centers CAE SimuFlite in Morristaun (piece of New Jersey, the USA) and in Burdzhes-Hilla (England). In August exercise machines will be certified on level D (the possibility of offset of training preparation instead of a raid on real VS is supposed). Flight training will also be carried out on own Dassault platforms in Merinyak (the southeast of France) and Le Bourget.
