More about Airbus A340 for sale

Airbus A340 – the long-haul four-motor turbojet widebody passenger plane developed by Airbus SAS. In general it is similar to A330. Until recently Airbus A340-600 was the longest in the world by the passenger plane with a length of fuselage of 75,36 meters. As of May, 2006 it was ordered 389 and 319 planes are put.

History Assembly of the first Airbus A340B of 1985 the department of developments of Airbus considered the possibility of creation of the 250-seater long-haul plane under the working designation TA 11. The decision on simultaneous development of four-engine A340 and the two-engine fellow under the working designation TA 9 was soon made (become the A330 model subsequently). Parallel design assumed cutting-down of cost of development of a new line of liners.

Germany in every possible way supported plans of Airbus, and the national carrier of Lufthansa volunteered to become the starting customer of the new plane. Start The program of development A340 was started in June, 1987. The purpose — to create long-haul “fellow” for short-range A320 and medium-haul A300. At that time two-engined planes of the Airbus lost to the four-motor Boeing 747 on norms of ETOPS: two-engined planes during flight always have to be at the minimum distance from possible emergency airfield on a case of refusal of one of engines. In this regard A340 was in family of Airbuses essentially new plane created especially for intercontinental flights.

In June, 1995 during another international aerospace exhibition in Paris the consortium Airbus reported about plans of development of the new version of the A340-200 plane capable to make nonstop flights on routes over 14 000 km long. During development of the A340 plane the consortium at first projected option with flying range of 12 400 km which by the sizes was identical to A330-300. But the analysis of prospects of development of the world market showed that the increased demand for widebody planes with flying range to 14 000 km is expected. In this regard Airbus started creation of version of A340-200 which differed fuselage with a reduced length at 4,26 m. Passenger capacity of the plane was reduced, but flying range was succeeded to increase up to 13 800 km.

Flight tests of skilled A340-300 began on October 25, 1991, and A340-200 — in April, 1992. Certification of both options on the European norms of JAA came to the end at the end of December, 1992, and in May, 1993 they received the certificate of FAA. At the end of February, 1993 the first A340-300 plane was received by Air France airline. At the beginning of February, 1993 the first A340-200 filled up the park of the German airline Lufthansa. On June 16-18, 1993 the A340-200 plane called by World Ranger executed round-the-world flight along a route Paris — Auckland (New Zealand) — Paris with one landing in Auckland.

This aircraft, having received the designation A340-8000 (A340-200HGW), I differed from basic option in existence of three auxiliary fuel tanks in a tail load box. All flight continued 48 h 22 min. On a piece Paris — Auckland 19.100 km long time of flight made 21 h 32 min. that was recognized as a new record for this route. But this record in the spring of 1997 was broken by the American Boeing 777-200IGW. When fuel prices spread up, the Boeing 777 as more economic plane, began to win against the Airbus by the number of orders. The number of orders for A340 was constantly reduced. In 2005 Airbus received the order for only 15 planes.

The presentation of the first A340pervonachalno it was planned to install on the plane IAE engines (International Aero Engines), but after the sudden termination of IAE of developments, on A340 it was decided to install the CFM CFM56-5C4 engine. A340 for the first time rose in air in October, 1991, and then engineers found the first serious lack of the plane: under weight of four motors A340 side panels taken from two-engined A330 when flying constantly experienced excessive vibration and sagged. For elimination of this defect the side panel was finished, and the side panel plastron around fastening of poles was considerably strengthened. In 1993 the plane came to operation, the first customers of steel of Lufthansa and Air France.

In January, 2006 Airbus declared creation of the advanced version — A340E (Enhanced). Because of enormous increase in prices for fuel for 2004 — 2005, sales of A340 were strongly reduced. The Boeing 777 remains by the most popular long-haul plane, but in Airbus claim that the new plane will be much more economic than the first A340 versions. In November, 2011 Airbus reported about cessation of production of the A340 long range airliner. “We didn’t sell any A340 within two years” — the finance director of corporation Hans Petter declared the Ring. He added that the plane didn’t sustain the competition to Boeing-777. Design A340 — a monoplane with a cantilevered arrow-shaped side panel. Big lengthening and existence of trailer aerodynamic surfaces provide high quality (10 units) and reduce inductive resistance. The side panel has the big relative thickness which increases internal volumes for fuel. The improved bearing properties allowed to reduce the area, lump of a design and, as a result, fuel consumption. The side panel is executed from high-strength aluminum alloys and composites.

Widely used also monolithic panels that simplified assembly and reduced production cost. It also allowed to lose the weight of a design and to reduce number of potential zones of violation of hermetic encapsulation. Exception of joints with an overlap, small number of bores under bolts reduced number of places where cracks can arise. On each extension housing flaps and that is interesting, seven sections of the slats occupying almost all length of a front edge are installed. Both flaps, and slats were operated automatically with the help of EDSU. The fuselage — a semi-monocoque design, round in a lateral section. In a plumage design widely applied composites that considerably reduced weight. The plane has the three-rack-mount cleaning-up chassis with a hinged suspender of wheel carts. A nasal rack — with twin steered wheels. Each main rack is supplied with two two-wheeled carts with a tandem arrangement of wheels. System of braking — automatic.

A340 navigation systems allow crew to fly in an automatic mode. The special sensor for definition of the center of gravity gives the corresponding signal on installation of the trimmer of an elevator. The cabin of the plane is unified with a cabin of other liners of the Airbus family. The main difference — the big sizes, an expanded overhead projector On a panel board six multipurpose displays on which navigation information and also parameters of operation of units of the plane is displayed are installed. Chairs of crew of new generation — with an electric control system on three shafts and with the rejected back. The provision of pedals and height of armrests — adjustable. At the left and on the right side control knobs are established. Technologies A340 has such systems, modern for the time, as: Completely digital control system Side joysticks of steering instead of traditional steering wheels The “Glass cabin” based on LCD monitors Wide use of composite materials
